Taiaiake Alfred

Sekon skennenkowa akwekon. Taiaiake iontiats. Kahnawake nitewatienon. Wakskarewake... I am a Mohawk author, consultant, and teacher of Indigenous knowledge and history.

I was born at Tiohtiake, Montreal, and grew up in Kahnawake. I was educated by Jesuits, served as a U.S. Marine Corps infantryman, and studied at Concordia University and Cornell University, where I earned a doctorate in political science. I'm now a professor in the Indigenous Governance Program at the University of Victoria.

In my writing and in my life, I strive to heed the voices of my ancestors and to defend the dignity and freedom of the Original People of this land.

My writings include books, newspaper columns, essays and humour. I have been a speaker and consultant for over twenty years and over the years have provided research and advice on land and governance to many First Nations.

I divide my time between Kanienke, the Mohawk homeland, and the territory of the Wsanec Nation on Vancouver Island, where I live with my wife and three sons.
